A little bit of information of the area we work in
An ex-mining town

Coalville is an ex-mining town situated in North West Leicestershire, between the M1 and M42 motorways. The town has a population of around 38,000. Coalville grew out of the industrial revolution as local mining villages like Swannington and Whitwick expanded, and railway pioneers, George and Robert Stephenson built railways throughout the area. With these expansions, new houses were built for the workers and their families, and Coalville was established around 1833.

Today the mining industry has finished and all that remains of the Coalville mine is a museum - Snibston Discovery Park.  Light industry and service companies now dominate the town’s business sector. As more houses and estates are built the town is quickly becoming a commuter area.  With easy access to the motorways, people are moving to Coalville, which is close to the countryside whilst offering various routes to work in the cities.  Coalvile is predominately ‘White English’ but more and more people from different ethnic origins are moving into the area.

There are many primary schools in the area, three middle schools (11-14 year old), an upper school and a technical college.

Coalville is close to Leicester and Loughborough, both are lively student cities.  There are regular busses from Coalville to Leicester, Loughborough and Nottingham.

Church and young people in Coalville

There are about 30 churches in the area in which Heartland YFC is active; most are very small churches and only a few of them have a good representation of young people in their services.  This decline is similar in most parts of England and we believe that a spiritual input from abroad will help to spiritually revive this area.
In recent years the church has become more and more aware of the need for good youth programs and many churches are looking for new ways to attract more young people to their programmes.
